(This is Andy...) I am excited how high BYU is ranked this early in the season. If as many BCS teams beat each other up as last year (LSU playing for the National Championship with two losses) could BYU play for the National Championship this year?
1. Oklahoma (plays Texas and Texas Tech)
2. Alabama (plays LSU)
3. LSU (plays Alabama)
4. Missouri (plays Texas)
5. Texas (Oklahoma, Missouri, and Texas Tech)
6. Penn St. (plays no team currently ranked higher than BYU)
7. Texas Tech (plays Texas and Oklahoma)
8. BYU
Because so many of these teams play each other - if BYU wins out and no other team moves ahead of BYU - the worst BYU could finish is 5th. But with the number of match ups and conference championships - could BYU finish as high as third or second and play for the National Championship? Let the debate begin.

ryan and i had a long conversation about this a couple of hours ago. he tried to teach me the crazy ins and outs of how the bcs works...we can hope byu will get in this time!! i went to the cotton bowl back in 96 when they were #5 and shut out of the bcs.
The latest stereotype perpetuated in commercials with "dumb" "know-nothing" husbands is so obviously false. Our hubbies simply prefer to focus ALL their knowledge on sports stats and standings. (My least favorite part of the baseball season is when Ben starts rooting for teams X Y and Z because of how their play will affect the standing of his team.) Don't get me wrong, I love BYU, I just don't delve deep enough, I guess! Thanks for figuring all this out for me, Andy. Keep on contemplating!
The question is not whether BYU will qualify for a BCS bowl - they clearly will qualify for a BCS bowl if they go undefeated. The question is whether they could be ranked number one or two in te BCS rankings at the end of the season and qualify for the National Championship game if the right teams lose. The BCS did not exist in '96. I think if BYU goes undefeated this year and next year and the right teams lose next year they could play for the National Title next year, but almost no scenario this year would give BYU enough respect to constitute a number one or two ranking in the BCS system.
There are a couple things to consider here. First of all, I think BYU has a very real chance of getting to the championship game this year. All they have to do is win out. Last year was crazy with lots of top ten teams losing week after week. The Cougars could easily sneak into the number two spot.
The controversy will be whether BYU deserves to be in the championship game. I am sure the SEC, Pac-10, Big XII, etc. fans will be going nuts pointing at BYU's weak schedule. But I will have no sympathy for these complainers since it's their bogus system that put BYU in that spot. At least the Cougars will have a chance to prove their worthiness on the field.
But this is all conjecture. BYU still has to defeat a bunch more opponents, including TCU and Utah.

paula, ryan's the same way...do we want the giants to really beat the diamondbacks, thus sending the dodgers to the post season? i mean the lesser of two evils is to send the diamondbacks rather than the dodgers right? never let the dodgers do well lol!
