Family Shirts

This summer, most of my family will be in Utah for family reunions. With my five siblings geographically spread out across the US (from Washington state to North Carolina) this is a big deal. Andy and I were thinking that it would be fun to make t-shirts to commemorate the occasion. I have only started to consider the possibilities, but let me share with you one of my ideas.

My mom says funny things. For instance, early one Saturday morning, she calls my brother who was a college student at the time. He was still asleep and groggily answered his phone. My mom proceeds to list off a bunch of things that she needed to do that day and wanted to coordinate some things with him. As my brother struggles to make sense of the phone call, he asks her, "Where are you?!?" Her response has become a classic one liner, "I'm in the beans and I'm heading west!" More confused than ever, my brother asks for clarification. Come to find out, my mom was shopping at a grocery store and was, logically, in the beans...heading west.

Not to be outdone, Andy has had a few gems as well. For example, one day, we were out weeding in our garden and I was telling him that I would like to plant some bougainvillea by an arch in our fence. His response was classic, "That sounds like a karate move. I'm going to bougainvillea your face!"

I could go on and on with quotes about how punching a sibling will give them cancer etc, etc. The purpose of this blog entry is to throw the idea out to my siblings and see if they are interested in having family shirts made up--each with a different, funny family quote on it. Perhaps an entire family could have the same quote, or we could do them randomly. If you're interested, please leave a comment and recommend your favorite quote.

Day of Service

Today was Wilmington's Day of Service. We woke up very early and were ready to go by 7:30am. Hundreds of volunteers came out to help in a variety of locations. Through the church, we had about 150 members in our group and there were about 700 volunteers in all. Some went to a cemetery to cut back brush, Andy and I went to a local park and helped plant trees. There were about 100 trees that needed to be planted and about 7 of us were trying to plant them all. We didn't finish, but we did plant quite a few. Planting trees sounds like a lot of fun, but after a couple hours of planting tree after tree, it starts to get very tiring. When we finished, they fed us lunch provided by a variety of local restaurants and businesses.

We had a good time and Andy was especially entertained when someone from the local news station came by to film the project. At one point, she came by and filmed us digging a hole for a tree and then asked to interview one of us. Andy jumped at the chance. Although his comments didn't make it on the news, we did.

Spin Move!

It seems like I've been so busy lately. Andy's parents came out for a visit a couple weeks ago, Andy and I went to NY when we took his parents to the airport in Raleigh, I got a prescription for glasses, I will be singing a duet at a Women's conference this Saturday, I will be going to Charlotte next week for a work-related conference and we've been trying to get our garden planted. So I'll have to take this one post at a time.

As I mentioned, Andy's parents were in town and it was a lot of fun to have them here. Andy's dad helped get our lawn care equipment up and running. I couldn't help but take a picture of Andy trying to follow the maintenance guidelines he found on the internet in order to get the riding mower fixed.

I'm glad I married someone who, quite effortlessly, keeps me so well entertained.

Carol helped spruce up our guest bathroom. She made the most adorable curtains to go along with our pink-themed bathroom. Heaven forbid we ever have any boys. They just might refuse to use that bathroom.













Thanks to Melanie for sending us a John Deere hat--now we have matching ones! I had gotten one for Andy a while back and I sometimes make him wear it when he mows the lawn. Great minds think alike.
